The easiest way out of this situation is to convert the NEF files to a more universal image format, like JPEG (JPG).

These files cannot be easily viewed on a computer and require the use of professional software, which is often expensive and hard to work with. NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format, which is the RAW image format used by Nikon, one of the most popular camera manufacturers. RAW is the generic name for the unprocessed image format it may be named differently, depending on the camera manufacturer. It is great from the professional perspective, but for the everyday user, it means having much larger files and consequent problems with opening, editing, and printing such images. “RAW” implies that such images retain as much unprocessed visual information from the camera’s sensor as possible. But, as it turns out, the best quality images are achieved with these cameras by keeping photos in a RAW image format, which can result in numerous problems. That’s why many people buy professional cameras that promise great results. So I think it is time for calm and reassessment rather than taking drastic moves until you understand exactly what happened in the renaming. When it comes to taking photographs, we always want to keep the most memorable moments of our lives in the best possible quality images. The whole thing does not make sense after my attempt at duplicating what you say happened. That is possible to do and you will have NEF files but they will not have any information that you do not have in the JPG and if you do it to the same file folder it will guarantee that even if the NEF files are still there they will be overwritten with the thumbnail information. PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT OPEN THEM IN NX AND RESAVE AS NEF. The new expansion should not overwrite the old extension. How exactly did she do the "conversion"? Did she actually CONVERT the files to JPG or did she just RENAME the files as JPG? I do not understand how you can convert a file to JPG and lose the NEF file unless you erase the NEF file at the time of conversion or after the conversion has been done. To me it does not seem that your problem stems for a simple RENAME command. I think you need to delve more into the exact process your wife used to rename the files. Did she put the JPG files in the same file folder? Is it possible that you still have the original NEF files in another file folder? In that case you should have both the thumbnail JPG file and the original NEF file on your drive. One extension should not overwrite another extension. However, even converting the NEF to JPG should not allow the JPG file to overwrite the NEF file. The other possibility is that there was some sort of conversion rather than renaming.

Can you open that JPG file into your imaging software? Either way it suggests that there was more to the process than simply using the RENAME function in Windows Explore.

Yet you are suggesting that you see the thumbnail view in Explore. It does not allow you to open the file in imaging software. It does not allow you to view the thumbnail. This suggests to me that there was more to the process than simply renaming the file.Ĭonclusion: Renaming the NEF as JPG using the RENAME command does not work. I thought maybe the reply that mentioned that you were seeing the imbedded JPG was possibly correct, But, from my test that does not seem to be the case. My test file, even though it has the JPG extension is still a NEF file. I cannot open the renamed JPG into Capture NX. I cannot open the renamed JPG into my imaging software, again because it is not really a JPG file. You should not be seeing JPG thumbnails in Explore yet you are implying that you do. In all due respect, to open a JPG it must be written as a JPG file and just renaming a file does not do that. The "new" renamed JPG does not open as a thumbnail in Explore, because it is not a JPG, it is still a NEF with a renamed extension.

I just went into Explore and renamed a NEF file to JPG using the RENAME command. There are things that do not make sense in what you are saying. I do not know how many of the replies above actually tried what they are suggesting or if they are just guessing.
